Milestone's success story began in 1998 when two software engineers - John Blem and Henrik Friborg Jacobsen - started their business.
Just two years after the first IP camera was released, Milestone created the first VMS software (in 1999). The system revolutionised the way IP camera systems could and could not be used.
The foundations of the well-known XProtect software were laid in 2002. The company not only offered customers a VMS program, but also created an open platform. This opened a door for different manufacturers to integrate the developments that support surveillance systems into a single system. Meanwhile, they have not forgotten their customers - they have developed a user-friendly interface to manage the software.
In 2005, the so-called SDK (Software Development Kit) was introduced, taking an even bigger step towards integration. The software allowed proprietary modules developed by third-party vendors to be integrated into Milestone XProtect VMS software through a single interface. Moreover, all this without any security risks.
Nowadays, integration is not only possible through SDKs, as plugins written by external software developers can also be installed. Plugins can be easily purchased on Milestone's own marketplace.
These are worth investing in, as they can solve a wide range of problems: for example, there are plug-ins that can be used to trigger an alert when a person makes a threatening gesture.
