Synology Inc. was founded in January 2000 when Cheen Liao and Philip Wong left Microsoft to pursue an independent project. Liao was the development manager of Microsoft Exchange Server Group, while Wong was Microsoft's sales director in Taiwan. The two of them started writing a new operating system called Filer OS, based on Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD), to be used in conjunction with Fastora NAS hardware to create a NAS solution.

To tightly integrate NAS software and hardware, Synology released its first complete solution, the DiskStation DS-101, in 2004. Since then, Synology has employed around 650 people worldwide. Synology Inc. is a Taiwanese company specializing in network attached storage (NAS).

Synology's family of NAS is DiskStation, these are the desktop models, FlashStation models and RackStation the rack mountable versions.

Synology products are distributed worldwide and are available in multiple languages. Synology is headquartered in Taipei, Taiwan and has subsidiaries around the world.
